Bloodborne Pathogens

Construction workers are sometimes required to work in areas where Bloodbome Pathogens may be present. Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms present in blood that cause disease. Workers can protect themselves by preventing their exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids such as urine, mucus and saliva.

• The diseases that are most likely to affect workers through exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens are Hepatitis B (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) leading to (AIDS).

• To protect yourself from these diseases treat all blood and body fluids as if they are infectious. If you are attempting to help an injured worker make sure you are wearing the proper personal protective equipment.

• At a minimum you should wear rubber gloves and goggles designed for the purpose.

• A breathing mask with a one way valve should also be used if mouth to mouth resuscitation is required.

• The Personal Protective Equipment should be readily accessible inside your vehicle.

• Also, wear rubber gloves and a full face shield when you are working in areas where blood and body fluids could be present. Examples are plumbing drain pipes, (especially those in hospitals, urgent care clinics, funeral homes, etc.) and waste water treatment plants. If you come in contact with blood or body fluids you should consider seeing a physician. Contact your supervisor immediately when there is an exposure.
